Peace to you from our little rock in the Pacific,
What an undeniably mind-blowing season of life our little tribe is living through. These past few months have been an utter whirlwind of emotional and spiritual ups and downs, full of twists and turns with heaps of unexpected and honestly unimaginable wildness mixed in. God is so incredibly faithful, but I think as we write this our heads and hearts are a little tired. Not tired in the weighty - depressive way, just tried in the way one might feel after running a marathon. Enduring, certainly celebrating, alive… but tired.
That said, we're also feeling emboldened! In fact, we are more excited and committed and dedicated to live out this wild, if not sometimes fickle, missional life to which we feel called. Our family's roots in YWAM as a global body are deepening as we continue to journey after knowing God and making Him known.
"Oh to know Christ - YES, we want to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that we have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at the goal, but we press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of us.” (Phil 3: 10-12)
We have mountains of news to share, but for the sake of this snapshot we’ll just hone in on three major movements hitting our family and ministry in this season.
/// AND THEN THERE WERE… SIX!
Most of you probably know by now that our Tribe is growing! We are ridiculously excited to be inviting Baby Schallert #4 into our lives come June 2016. OH YES! Excited to welcome the endless chorus of "WAIT!? WHAT!? HOW MANY KIDS DO YOU HAVE!?"and the coming barrage of awkward "WELL YOU SURE HAVE YOUR HANDS FULL"stares in airports as we lug our rambunctious but utterly perfect mess around this world. We love our growing family!
After having two home births in South Africa, we feel a little bit like fish out of water re-learning the Hawaiian maternity system, but regardless, we can’t wait to meet this little rascal. Margot and Vera are beyond eager as well and are already committed to a handful of certain baby names… "Bubbles The Unicorn Schallert", courtesy of Margot, is topping the list at present… we shall see about that one.
Diane is busy fighting off the morning sickness as best she can, but we definitely welcome your prayers for health and energy for baby and mama.
/// WE’RE BUYING A… HOUSE!?
Well a condo actually… and yes that’s a real statement… we have to keep saying it out loud and pinching ourselves to remind us it’s actually happening. Buying a house, an actual / stable place to put our stuff, hasn’t ever really been a part of the equation for us. It’s one of those things we just tossed to the wind when we said yes to the call of missions figuring it just wasn’t in the cards for the life we were choosing. But a few months ago, rather out of the blue, some supporters opened the door for us with a downpayment. Our heads and hearts have been reeling since.
God is so incredibly good! With baby #4 right around the corner and with our heartbeat for discipling nations growing (not shrinking) the timing honestly couldn’t be better. We really feel with our constant coming and going lifestyle, especially for the kids, that there will be such a healthy sense of rootedness in having a space to call “home plate.” So, after a quick search we are right in the middle of buying a Hualalai Condo (our YWAM friends will know the joint) right next to the YWAM, Kona campus. It’s a rather emotional, exciting and yet tension filled experience to say the least, but we feel the Lord all over it.
/// A LIFE TOGETHER… EVERYWHERE!
After months of pioneering, planing and praying… months of taxing questions and discernment since landing back here at YWAM, Kona we are full of anticipation for what the Lord is orchestrating with our ministry.
As you all know our hearts are still rather firmly buried in the ground of South Africa. In fact, our whole family is taking off next week for a two and a half week visit to Cape Town (Nov 1st - 18th) to keep the fire alive and have some strategic meetings with folks there. We spent over a year developing and pioneering a Discipleship Training School in Cape Town called “A Life Together DTS” dedicated to training, equipping and championing young people for a life of radical community, discipleship and missions. The first school launched in September of 2014 and graduated this past March... It shook us all in the best of ways and reenforced our heartbeat for developing discipleship training environments. Since moving back to Kona we have been living with the tension of knowing God wanted and still wants to do more with A Life Together… but what exactly and how have been rather elusive until the past few months.
Since the middle of the year however many doors, both here at YWAM, Kona as well as around the world, have been opening and more importantly a collective of committed and likeminded folk have started to catch the vision and heartbeat of A Life Together. As of right now we’re excited to share that we have formed a global team of friends dedicated to training and equipping young people to run after Jesus, one another and a life with the poor. Over the coming years much of our missional lives in YWAM will be wrapped up in launching and rooting more A Life Together DTS’s in Cape Town, Kona and beyond.
Pioneering out of Cape Town, we hope that A Life Together DTS will continue to be a gathering space where fellow recovering sinners can wander together and widen their imaginations of what is actually possible in this world. We believe, whole heartedly, in a movement of loving God, one another and the world well… of learning to live justly and honestly and more beautifully so that the Kingdom of Jesus can reach into and reconcile the most divisive, most violent and most segregated spaces on earth.
We want to be a part of the great movement of reconciliation aching in the heart of God and we believe DTS continues to be a beautiful catalyst to that end.
Our next A Life Together DTS will be launching in July of 2016 here at YWAM, Kona HI
In the news, Diane fulfilled a dream she has had for a long time by launching her ONLINE SHOP of handmade baby and children's goods! The business also helps to support our ministry. The shop is currently closed while we travel to South Africa but keep checking back so you can score some handmade gifts for the special little ones in your lives!
/// NEW SEASONS, NEW NEEDS.
As our family continues to push on in YWAM, our needs continue to cycle through the endless ebb and flow. We constantly find ourselves in both seasons of abundance and seasons of great financial need. That allusive idea of “financial sustainability” seems to be something the Lord is always challenging us with. “Trust me… just trust me" He always says... and sure enough, after years and years in a voluntary mission, consistently living off of the financial support of individuals and communities who want to participate in the work we’re doing... God has ALWAYS made a way (mostly via amazing people like y'all).
Today is no different, as we head into the coming season which will call for a bit more travel and a few more bills, not to mention the arrival of another little miracle the middle of next year, we are trusting the Lord for around $1,000 in NEW monthly partnerships.We would love to invite you to pray into and consider financially giving towards our family's needs and to sow into the work we do in the nations. Also, if you already are partnered with us we invite you to pray about possibly giving a little more every month if you are able. TO SUPPORT CLICK HERE.
